“Did you know that…” Your union subscriptions are tax deductible?

Have you claimed on them in the past 6 years? If not, you could be in for a nice fat cheque (over £100) from the taxman! This is what to write:

<Your Address>

H.M Inspector of Taxes
South Wales Area (Oxford)
Ty Glas Road, Llanishan
CARDIFF CF4 5TW

Dear Sirs

I wish to claim tax relief for my NASUWT subscriptions for the past 6 years. Below is a list of the subscriptions I have paid as a Full/Part-time member of the NASUWT.

  Full-time Part-time
2001 £108.00 £54.00
2002 £114.60 £57.30
2003 £117.40 £58.70
2004 £124.00 £62.00
2005 £130.00 £65.00
2006 £136.00 £68.00

Yours faithfully

Anne Other

Ms A. N. Other

Payroll Reference: (on Pay slip)
N.I. Number: (on Pay slip)

The annual subscription for 2007 is £144.00.

Members who are in their first or second year of teaching were required to pay only 50% of the stated subscription and, similarly, those who were working part time, employed on temporary contracts or undertaking supply work and who did not exceed the equivalent 95 days teaching during the calendar year, also paid at a rate of 50% of the standard rate as given above.

Contact your local Tax Office (that deals with your salary). For employees of Oxfordshire County Council it is:

H.M Inspector of Taxes
South Wales Area (Oxford)
Ty Glas Road, Llanishan
CARDIFF CF4 5TW

You are entitled to receive relief on two thirds of your subscription. Your tax relief will be reflected in your tax coding, resulting in a reduction on the tax on your wages. If you encounter any problems with your application, feel free to email NASUWT Headquarters at taxrelief@mail.nasuwt.org.uk. Please give as much detail as possible in your email.

“Did you know that…” You are entitled to request a Health and Safety Inspection of your school?

If ANY member of NASUWT has concerns about the health and safety aspects of their workplace they are entitled to request a Health and Safety Inspection from a Trades Union H&S Representative.

Each union in each school is entitled to elect their own H&S Rep, and ideally NASUWT would like to see such a person in every school. But, recognising that serving teachers are generally so busy they cannot take on additional responsibilities, Oxfordshire Federation NASUWT negotiated a Roving H&S Representatives scheme with the LEA whereby you can request such an inspection from one of our highly trained NASUWT H&S Roving Reps.

If you would like such an inspection carried out on your behalf in your school, all you have to do is fill in the two slips at the bottom of this page. Hand one to your Headteacher and post the other to Oxfordshire NASUWT

Please do your bit to make your working environment safer and more healthy for yourself and your colleagues.
