91% voted “Yes” for Action Short of Strike Action (ASoSA)

Latest News: On 11 December the Secretary of State for Education sent a letter to all schools in England seeking to encourage headteachers and governors to take punitive action against teachers participating in our lawful action short of strike action ...

Members should rest assured that the NASUWT will robustly and vigorously defend any member who is threatened by their school management or governors, acting on the advice of the Secretary of State.

  • every day that you take the action, you are sending a strong message of defiance against his relentless attacks on the teaching profession;
  • the action is empowering you as professionals to make a stand against activities which do not enhance teaching and learning;
  • not one single pupil has had their education disrupted by the action short of strike action instructions;
  • the action is pupil, parent and public friendly;
  • where headteachers and governors have attempted to penalise staff for participating in the action, members have stood firm and parents have rallied to the support of teachers, forcing the employers to back down.

Guidance on the implementation of the NASUWT instructions

What if my Head tells me to do something the action instructions say to refuse?

Remember that this is a National Action against the Secretary of State and is entirely justified and legally constituted. You have the legal right to take this action Try not to take action alone. Involve other members, inform your local Secretary or the Federation Secretary. Call for support from your Association, we will be happy to arrange to meet you and other members to discuss implementing the instructions. Follow the ASoSA document in giving your Head clear warning of what is wrong and how long he/she has to put it right. Engage in negotiation to resolve such a situation if you are trained and have confidence, otherwise call in reinforcements. Use the pre-printed ‘under duress’ forms available on line; then get onto your Local Secretary right away.
